Opportunities for Work Groups

We were thrilled to have youth and their leaders from Riverdale Presbyterian Church in University Park, MD join us this week to participate in a Mission Work Group project. They were an enthusiastic, hard-working bunch and they fit right in here on the campus, making themselves useful and at home. Carolyn and Don Fink, along with Dave Sisson, led the youth ranging in ages from 16 to 20 years old. In exchange for work in landscaping, painting and odd jobs, the group was able to stay in our lodges and enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining hall at a much reduced rate. They took advantage of our close proximity to New York City and worked in a soup kitchen; some participated in the Midnight Run. Our maintenance crew was happy to have the help on this 35 acre campus, they stained our outdoor dining deck and helped to beautify the grounds.  In addition to their hard work, they made time for recreation visiting the scenic Harriman State Park; they swam in Lake Welsh right here in Stony Point.  Come back again, Riverdale Youth, you are most welcome here at Stony Point Center!

Rick and Kitty Ufford-Chase were named Transitional Co-Directors of Stony Point Center at the recently concluded Governing Board meeting. They will share the full-time Director’s position beginning August first of this year.

“Kitty and Rick are uniquely qualified to lead Stony Point Center into its vision for the future,” said Gary Batty, Governing Board President. “Not only do they have extensive backgrounds in peace and justice work that is deeply grounded in the practice of their faith, they also bring a passion for modeling an intentional community at Stony Point Center - both strong components of the vision.”

Kitty and Rick wrote in their cover letter to Stony Point’s Board, “We are excited as we imagine helping historic Stony Point transition in its mission as it prepares to meet the needs of yet another generation both inside and outside the church.” They continued, “We have caught a sense of the spiritual hunger that exists across the United States right now – hunger described as a desire to see the church become more ‘missional’ and expressed by young adults as being ‘spiritual but not religious.’ There is a deep longing for a new experience of following Jesus faithfully in the heart of empire, and Stony Point is the ideal place to galvanize that energy.”

  Bridge to a New Vision

(Stony Point, NY)--The director of Stony Point Center steps aside to create a bridge to new leadership for “a new way for a new day.”

In his remarks to the General Assembly Council committee in Louisville on February 14, 2008, Rev. William Pindar stated “It is with a heart full of hope in the future and memories full of joy and accomplishment that I, at my own initiative, announce my decision to step aside as director of Stony Point Center and conclude eleven years of employment with the Center.”

Pindar will remain in the office until June 30, 2008 and formally terminate on July 31, 2008. In speaking with the GAC’s Stewardship & Mission Support and the Spirituality & Discipleship committees, Pindar reflected upon a statement made by Gracie Allen to her husband, George Burns, as her life was coming to a close. “George! Never put a period where God has placed a comma.” Pindar continued, “Stony Point Center’s legacy of mission is not at an end. It is at a transitional comma time. The remarkable service of the Center with its many guests and current groups will continue as the new vision unfolds.”
