Job Announcement: Food Grower/Educator

Stony Point Retreat and Conference Center, a 180-bed facility in Rockland County, lower Hudson River Valley (30 mi. north of Manhattan), is seeking a full-time, fully benefitted food grower/educator to help with start up program that will grow more food (eventually up to 2 acres of space) for the dining room, help educate the Center's guests on healthy food issues, and connect with local/regional folks on food justice issues.

The job involves planting, growing, harvesting, and cleaning vegetables, herbs, and fruit for use in the Center's dining room; making use of and increasing greenhouse/hoop house space to start seeds and extend the growing season; growing flowers for use in the dining room; animal husbandry; providing opportunities for resident volunteers, staff, guests, workgroups, summer institute participants, and others to work in the gardens; recruiting additional local volunteers to work in the garden as needed; working with volunteers and staff to create and evaluate educational materials and workshops around sustainable food production practices, composting, food system, community food security and food justice issues; and building relations with local farmers, community gardeners, and food justice-oriented people to support community efforts to create local, accessible to all, sustainable food systems.

Qualifications include 2 or more years growing organically and animal husbandry experience, ability to work well with diverse populations, positive attitude, and a passion for growing and educating about food. Salary commensurate with experience. Position to begin by March 1st.
