We are searching for a Gilmor Sloane Host/Resident Volunteer

The Gilmor Sloane Host is primarily concerned with guest orientation and service. The host should be comfortable interacting with group leaders and participants and have the flexibility to handle whatever needs arise during the guest group’s stay. This person will live in the house, work closely with the Conference Services Manager to understand the requirements of each event, and will work collegially with housekeeping staff, building attendants and maintenance personnel to communicate the needs of the house.

What follows is a description of tasks:

  • Consult with Guest Services regarding when guests will arrive, what their needs and expectations are

  • Work with Housekeeping Manager to ensure guest rooms and first floor are ready for arrival of guests. Frequently vacuum & dust first floor as well as arrange chairs as needed.

  • Notify building maintenance of any issues and repairs needed.

  • Occasionally arrange fresh flowers for public spaces (decorating with wreaths and Dickens Village houses at Holiday time)

  • Water house plants in the sun room

  • Polish silver pieces

  • Keep kitchen clean after own use

  • Set the table for special meals

    • Choose appropriate china – if fine china is used, washing by hand

    • Choose appropriate table linens – laundering them afterwards

    • Arrange flowers for the table

    • Prepare beverages for special meals – tea & coffee

    • Serve the food with Chef assigned to GSH

      • Wait on table with the usual serving/replenishing coffee as well as clear china & silverware as the meal progresses

  • Monitor energy usage/adjusting thermostats


  • Weed & dead-head flower beds

  • Trim shrubbery

  • Water hanging plants

  • Rake leaves from weed shrubbery

  • Pull weeds from pathway leading to sundial

  • Wash the porch floor, arranging & re-arranging chairs on the porch

  • Retrieve pillows for porch furniture from storage and return to storage seasonally.

Full-time Resident Volunteers at Stony Point Center receive room & board, a small bi-weekly stipend and basic health care. Health care is provided after three months of service. There are currently over a dozen full-time volunteers, and newcomers are encouraged to participate in the life of our multifaith community.
