Stony Point Center joins all those committed to justice and the righting of wrongs in celebrating Indigenous People’s Day!

10 Oct 2022

Sweetwater Cultural Center former Presbyterian Church in Stony Point NY

In September 2022, Stony Point Center was graced with a gathering of Indigenous leaders of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. who came together in our newly installed high-tech Overbrook Conversation room in Allison House (as the first group to use this special space!) They gathered to discuss the Dismantling of the Doctrine of Discovery.

The PC(USA) at the 2022 General Assembly repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery – but what does that mean in practice? Over 3 days, these wonderful leaders shared, listened, commented and elaborated on their peoples’ experiences with the Doctrine of Discovery and the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s involvement in painful acts against our indigenous siblings. Gathering and sharing their personal experiences as well as their scholarship on the impact of that doctrine was an essential first step in moving toward understanding and into action. Stony Point Center was honored to host this gathering.

Owned and operated by the PC(USA), Stony Point Center has historically been and is proud to continue to be an open and inviting space called to nurture the voices of the marginalized and help sow the seeds of justice.

May you spend this day in reflection and prayer about what it means to truly repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery and stand in solidarity with all indigenous peoples.
