A confluence of technological advances and societal changes are allowing us to expand on the old model of stand-alone conferences; rather, these programs begin ongoing conversations with in-person, online and hybrid gatherings. In short, one-time events do not solve systemic problems, but long-term engagement in generative conversations can equip a network for action. We are calling this the “Overbrook Conversation Series” anchored in the Allison “Overbrook” House at Stony Point Center (SPC). The house literally overlooks a brook that flows and evolves just like the challenges of addressing social justice flows and evolves. Stony Point Center is committed to keeping a dialogue going to encourage innovation and action. We also remain committed to serving all, not just those who can fly to New York, so we are offering truly hybrid retreats to allow online participants to fully engage and learn.
The offerings and style of gatherings will change over time too. Some will be leaders gathered for think-tank style gatherings to keep our leading-edge thinkers engaged, connected and generative; some will be engaging with those leaders in person or at a distance; some may be connections to ongoing webcasts; some may be regionally based around the country; some may be “look and see” gatherings with field trips to social justice in action, and more. We’ll grow and adapt as the need for addressing social ills continues to evolve.
