Shut it Tight, Shut it Right, Shut it with Citizen Oversight!
A monthly meeting of the grassroots movement to close Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in a responsible and accountable manner, and shift our energy usage toward safe and sustainable sources. All are welcome — April's meeting will be ONLINE. See below for Zoom Info.
Since July of 2011, Stony Point Center has been the home of a movement of citizens in the Hudson Valley and NY Metro Area who are concerned about the safety of the reactors at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. Because of the changing energy market, Entergy, the owner of the reactors has finally decided to close! An agreement has been signed with NYS and Riverkeeper to end litigation in return for Unit 2 closing in 2020 and Unit 2021 closing in 2021. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has signed off on the agreement. The closing is fraught with difficulties for the towns that depend on Indian Point for tax revenue.
Decommissioning the plant and safely isolating the high level radioactive waste that is stored there is the next task. To accomplish this we need to pass legislation for a Citizens Oversight Board comprised of knowledgeable people who will speak for the public and keep us all informed. Read the legislation we are proposing to the NYS legislature to establish this Board at www.ipsecinfo.org or call the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition at 888-474-8848 for more information.
