Join members of the Community of Living Tradition as we meet online to explore our "New Normal" — every Wednesday at 5pm eastern time, via Zoom Conference Call.

This week we will continue with our exploration of Octiavia Butler's science fiction classics, Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, which follow the journey of Lauren Oya Olamina, a young Black woman who builds intentional community and formulates a new religious movement while navigating herself and her kindred through a time of massive social upheaval. We will also explore what is known about the third sequal which Butler intended to write but never finished. Butler's prophetic storytelling is guiding communities around the world to deal with change and find ways to adapt to an unrecognizable future. In this moment, we must look to visionaries for guidance.

Amy Dalton and David Ragland will lead the conversation around the themes emerging from these books. This event is co-sponsored by the Truth-Telling Project.

We recommend that you read both books, but you are welcome to join and listen even if you aren't able to.

In future book discussions, we will be reading adrienne maree brown's Emergent Strategy, which was inspired by Butler's writing.

‘Living into the New Normal’ is a new series that Community of Living Traditions at Stony Point Center has created to explore the world that the COVID19 pandemic reveals. Using the lenses of our religious and spiritual traditions, our experiences of intentional community and mutual aid, and our connection to intersectional movements for justice and peace, we will try to understand and imagine how to harness this difficult time to live into a shared journey toward a new normal that will serve the needs of all. Click more information about the series, and a listing of all the events.
