Multifaith Gathering for Freedom
December 22, 2019 3:00 pm
December 22, 2019 5:00 pm
Join us for a spiritually grounded call for reparations, sponsored by the Community of Living Traditions, the Fellowship of Reconciliation-USA, the Campaign FOR Truth & Reparations, and the Truth Telling Project.
In solidarity with the second #ReparationsSunday
, we will gather to deepen our commitment to the call for reparations for descendants of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and build reparative relationships.
December 22 is Jubilee Freedom Day. Similar to Juneteenth where we celebrate the end of slavery, Jubilee Freedom Day remembers the liberation of some 25,000 or more people from bondage when Union forces reached the coast of Georgia.
The FOR Truth and Reparations Campaign approaches reparations as a spiritual practice rooted in the UN definition of reparations involving Restitution, Compensation, Education, Healing and Guarantees of Non-repeat. More than a transaction, reparations are a relational practice of healing spiritual, moral, and material harm. Now more than ever, our nation need healing, religious, spiritual, and faith communities to help lead and support this work.
Celebration participants include:
- Rev. Weldon McWilliams IV, Senior Pastor, Christ Temple Baptist Church
- Amy Dalton, Organizer, Community of Living Traditions
- Dr. David Ragland, Senior Bayard Rustin Fellow, Fellowship of Reconciliation
- Owl - Ramapough Lenape Nation
- Alan Levin - Network of Holistic Activism
All are welcome; the event is free and open to the public. More information at facebook or groundswell
